    i really need help , i moved into my place in oct , last yr , never had a garden before, i have no grass , where grass is meant to be , i tried grass seed and it never grew , should i try something else , but i need it on the cheap , any ideas ????

    Hi Tina,

    Welcome to Gardeners corner.


    My guess is the seed got too dry and/or was eaten by Pidgeons.

    You need to rake the seed into the ground a bit and keep it watered, should come up in about a week depending on temperature, the warmer the better.

    I wonder if the the problem is that the previous owners neglected the lawn, and let it become so compacted and malnourished that now when its dry, its like concrete, and when it rains, the water just sits on the surface for hours, and so the old grass just gradually died off and now the ground is unsuitable for new grass to grow.

    Of course it could be many other things too, but the situation I've just described is what I've had to deal with since buying my house a year ago.

    I could tell you what I've done about it, but unless yours is the same problem, my strategy might be a lot of totally unnecessary hard work. So maybe best if you describe the conditions you have in a bit more detail, and see if you can get some pics on:)

    I'd say if the soil's hard, aerate it with a fork and then seed it, and keep it nice and wet.
