I caught this chap flying away from my pond a few days ago
He and his friends have eaten all of my fish (over 100) this past couple of years
It now returns to eat the frogs

I know they are a pest when eating pond fish but I have to say they are majestic birds. I love to see them flying over with their characteristic 's' shape neck.

When they go into your pond they generally land and then wade in from the side. I read that if you get short lengths of bamboo cane and push them in the ground you can stretch black cotton between them. The cotton has to be tight so as not to tangle any small birds. The idea is that the herons walk in to it and it gives them an almighty fright. I tried it a few years back. I found a heron feather on the ground but never had another visit afterwards.

I'd much rather have herons visiting my pond than have fish in it. Fish are a menace as they eat all the tadpoles and dragonfly larvae

Fabulous pics. Friend had the same trouble. He stretch a pice of fine black anti bird netting over the first foot from the edge of the pond. Hard to see, but it stopped the heron.
We have a heronry not that far away, I can see it with the telescope, but they have not been this way for a while. Often used to see them walking across the fields behind us, frog hunting?
