A blasted Heron was in my garden near the pond as I opened the bilnds, when I went out side I found a dying fish with a gaping gash across it's back. There is a 2" weld mesh over the pond and with the water level low, when the heron speared the fish it smacked it's head:thumb:There was a lovely spattering of blood on the rocks and feathers stuck to the mesh. I do hope he pops in tomorrow....I've set up a trip wire whip,it won't kill it but it gives 'em a heck of a fright:cool:

Seriously, it's not much fun seeing a mutilated fish Pal.:(

I remember years ago when I was a wee lass watching a carrion crow fly away with one of our pet goldfish! it had the cheek to sit on the roof opposite to devour it's snack! I feel your pain!

The only time I tried to keep some cute gold fish in my mini pond in the old garden my cat Jonesey ate them all in a matter of two days (4 fish). :(

I take it I'm the only one that feels sorry for the heron?

Paladin - please don't do anything to hurt this Heron if it returns- it doesn't know or understand that there are some fish it is allowed to eat and some that aren't, because man says so.

Just make your fish totally inaccessible for it.

    Wildlife doesn't understand man-made rules :(

No. I fully understand the reflex to defend your own, don't we all do the same with sprays, bugkillers and snail traps.
May be being sorry for the herons and the squirrels is a double standard, just because the heron is so beautiful, and the squirrels are fluffy and sweet. I still can't help it. May because there are so many bloody bugs and not so many herons andfluffies lol.

Please Pal, as Cookie says, lock the fish securely and let the be disappointedwithout hurting him. :(

I love nature it's a pity that herons didn't eat cats and squirrels instead of the fish we would be rid of two gardeners pests in one go:D (waiting for the fall out) did anyone see the pictures in the paper the other day of the heron eating the duckling.
