Just a second year veg-gardener here and this forum seems to be full of useful advice and genuine people.
I have a long, thin garden to the rear of my house in Herts, only part of which I have so far cultivated, the remainder being a bramble-nightmare at the moment!

    Current state-of-the-veg...

Sweetcorn: looking OK but some way to ripe I think. Lost a lot of tassles, not sure why (mice?)
French beans: really good again ( I grew some last year too). Decent crop and tasty.
Borlotti beans: a bit disappointing. Pretty smal crop and lost the plants early to, I think, some mineral deficiency (yellowing leaves).
Purple sprouting broccoli: did really well earlier on, but I was late in netting them and have been fighting the catepilars so I don't know how well they'll survive.
Broad beans: kinda OK. Better than last year (when I got one pod!) but had trouble with aphids and I think they got mozaic virus. Had a good few feeds but had to pull them early.
Peas: very disappointing. Started well but pods started to deform and it all got a bit icky. Pulled them up early too. (I lost all my peas to powdery mildew last year)
Chard: OK. Pigeons got first lot but better after netting. Bit sluggy though. Not a very interseting vegetable though. I planted a white variety but I think the ones with red stalks have a better flavour...
Kol rahbi: pigeons got first lot of these too! Supposed to be easy to grow but they're magnets for slugs AND catepillars so out of about 50 plants, there's only one that's edible (and that's been chewed by the slugs a bit!)
Courgette: absolutely amazing. I have three plants (2 yellow one green) that are HUGE and producing boatloads of juicy courgette. Friends and family benefitting from these too...
Squashes: I have 5 squashes which, after planting out, I thought were dead. Now they are covering vast swathes of garden and just starting to produce fruit. I hope to have a glut of these too in the weeks to come.
Tomatoes: after beinmg stricken with blight last year, growing some "blight resistant" ones in pots this year. Reasonable amount of fruit but only just starting to ripen. Still hopeful.

Plus... carrots: (not too good. Ground too stony and slugs seem to like them...). Onions: excellent few dozen now hanging in my lean-to. Spring onions (brilliant) and half-a-dozen herbs.

You know, there is so much to learn! When I started I didn't realise so much time is spent reducing the effects of disease and pests for one thing. But; when I can wander out into my back garden and harvest a few sweet, luscious veg and herbs taht will be on my plate within a few minutes, it makes the late-night slug hunting, early morning pigeon scaring and interminable catepillar squidging very, very worthwhile.

    My best regards to all.

    Jonathan.
