I must admit at the age of 78 having survived a fee ops etc I rely on a very hard working guy to do most of my gardening such as cutting the grass and hedges, not to mention removing 2 trees such as the one in the middle of http://www.sigord.co.uk/TEMP/Garden.pdf . But I do like to tinker around moving a few plants, though I doubt I will bother to plant many this year with this drought in the SE or attempt to grow Toms etc as I used to do when younger and I lived in SE London.

Welcome to GC Gordon, that's a fair size garden and quite a few hedges. The hose pipe ban is going to cause a lot of problems for gardeners in the East/SouthEast this year.

Actually as a first stage licenced Radio HAM I cannot of course use the excuse of not bothering to use the Short Waves for long distance chats, because there is not room for a long Antenna. But the truth is at my age I am not fit enough to clamber up ladders. So I talk (QSO) to HAMs all over the world much easier using Echolink with a PC on the Internet.

Hi Gordon, Welcome to Gardeners Corner:sign0016: . Enjoying the garden and tinkering around with plants is what makes a gardener!

I lived at Hastings a long time ago for nearly two years on the East Hill and used to fish off the old Harbour.....good days!!:snork:

Born and bred in Hastings myself. Only a stone's throw away in Battle now. If you go and stand on the top of East Hill, maybe we can wave to each other!! Welcome to the Funny Farm,

I used to take my late wife Betty to Battle at times for a cuppa and a donut. But thanks to Radiotherapy I seldom travel far now, so I buy a lot of bits from Ebay now. Betty loved to nick daffs all out now from the garden, but due to poor eyesigth fell down there one day. I find it best to NEVER disturb daffs, just leave them put to mulitply. Remove the heads when dead but please do not tie up the leaves to be tidy.

    Am I right?

I agree. If you tie them up you can at least add the Bow Tie and Top hat - otherwise they would look out of place in a working garden.
My only experiences with Battle tend to involve OH and a few heated words:heehee:
Welcome anyway Gordon. Be careful though - you may become another "Committed Gardener". Look out for the white coats.

No chance now of me ever becoming a dedicated gardener, only a little pottering. 5 minutes of bending and too much backache. In fact I finished up a year or two back at the Conquest Hospital with aches all over due to moving compost around the garden.

I still persaude my gardener to leave the first heavy spring grass cuttings in a heap for compost, instead of in the Council Bin I now pay £40 pa. But next Autum when well rotted down, I only move a little compost at a time.

    Hi Gordon
When I said committed, I was referring to the mental aberations that seem to inflict Forum members. I am also a casual, gentle as it goes trier - bad back and all.
