    Hi Guys,

new to this site a new to gardening so be nice, please. Big hello to you all.

I'm in the process of building my own house in rural west Norfolk. I'm going to have lots of questions for you all about all aspects of my new garden. It's pretty much a blank canvas, with a few established plants and large shrubs and one large depressing conifer hedge.

This hedge must be about 18ft high and 140ft long. I was thinking of cutting this down to about 6 - 8ft and stripping it completly of branches and foliage and leaving the trunks in as a barrier/ support for new plants....good idea or bad?

This is a list of what we want from our new garden.

    1, Organic
2, Kitchen Garden (we have a 18X36ft plot behind the garage, south facing)
3, Mederterainian style patio (14X25ft area)
4, Lawn with boarders (50X30ft area)
5, Small chillout/shady (perhaps tropical groto) hidden corner with small pond plus seating and fire
    6, Low maintainence
7, Good for wildlife (but not for mosquitos - eucalyptus is good for keeping them away I think)
    8, Quick to establish
    9, Good for entertaining
10, year round colour and intrest
11, no bedding plants or annuals, perhaps just evergreen and deciduos shrubs and trees.
12, no pets, and kids are in their mid teens
13, I could even make a thin strip of land with wild flowers, nettles and 3 or 4 fruit trees

    Please excuse my poor spelling.

Hi Bigbaddad, welcome. Your garden must be BIG. Post some pics please.

Unlike Helofadigger i'm not jealous at all. (Fibber:rolleyes:)

You have a lot of work involved and i'm sorry i can't offer any advice but why not put your progress in the 'projects' thread? They are amazing. You can let us know step by step how you are getting on.

2 years, hmmm. Not a lot in gardening terms me thinks. What do I know though. Don't try to do too much at once. Although saying that, if i'm in the mood i have to work but i can only keep going for about 10 minutes at a time - just as well i only have a small garden.

Just thought about your introduction - you are building a house too:eek:. You will be in complete melt down if you're doing it all. Take it steady. As someones signature on here 'live for today, garden for tomorrow' or something like that, sorry can't remember exactly,

Keep us all up to date.

    cheers

    hi bigbaddad
i too have moved last november into a new property and despite my oh and i being pensioners, and my oh disabled, i have loved planning and working in my garden. Our garden is a fraction of the size of yours but words cannot describe the pleasure and satisfaction you get as you complete each part
