    Hi all,

I live in East Lancs on the top of a big hill about 260m above sea level. It's wind swept up here and is usually about 3 degrees cooler than the valley below.

It makes keeping plants healthy difficult. And getting the grass to stay green is a constant battle which I'm currently winning this year.

My rear garden is on three tiers and the top tear is as high as the house and backs onto a field.

The problem is, the only bit I could grow veggies in is rife with mares tail and solid clay and not level.

We tried a few trees and shrubs for the last few years but even they couldn't cope except for a flag pole blossom tree and an u known ugly bush which turned a gorgeous pink this year.

We have a gabion wall on the second tier and I've tried an unusual approach this year. I cut the top of the baskets so I could sink 18" pots into the wall with the bottoms cut off. Filled with miracle grow compost and put in flowers, alpines, large lilies and some Fuscias. No idea if it'll work long term.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

I live on a hill too, recently the rain and wind has been battering most of my plants which is very frustrating, but on the plus side drainage is better and during the winter, frosts roll off down into the valley so they get it much worse.

Welcome to GC Lancashire lad. :)I know what it's like to battle with a windy situation, I live at almost sea level and a coastal position.

Any pictures of your garden would be welcome as Apple Blossom has said. They will help us to give you ideas on coping with the conditions. Hedging is my first thought. :)
