We trimmed the main plant as it looked like the top branches had died. Within a few days small plants were coming up everywhere and have now taken over the front garden, please help as we need to get our grass back..

      Looks a bit like Rhus,
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhus_typhina
It speads like crazy especially once you cut out the main plant.

Think I'd use weedkiller, (glyphosate) if you want to get rid of it permanently.

Hi Marley, no need to delete, we both posted without the knowledge of the others post.
            Sumac is the same plant.
            Rhus being the Latin name.

jem, I'd not both with the council, just hit it now with the glyphosate, in a month or so it will be too late.
You might need to kill a few remaining shoots next year.

Often called "round up" but there are other trade names, the actual chemical is Glyphosate, have a read before buying.
It will kill any grass also, but it has the benefit of becoming in active once it touches the soil.
So there is no harm to the soil and next spring you could reseed the grass area.

If you do not want to kill the grass then use a Lawn Weedkiller. Verdone do a good one and it does work on Tree suckers.
