This little chap is still visiting nearly every night ! Time he was in hibernation ?

Sorry my link could not be posted.. It was just a photobucket video clip of a hedgehog that still has not gone into hibernation. I filmed him with a trail camera but I cant post either pictures or short video clips.

What am I doing wrong ?

    Charlie.

It has been fairly warm up until recently Charlie so hibernating animals as well as plants are in confusion. There's also a chance he may be looking for food, have you any cat or dog food that you could put out for him. :)

As a new member you can't post pictures until you have built up a certain number of posts, unfortunately I can't remember how many you need, sorry.

I thought it was 10 posts, so you should be able to by now Charlie. With photos they need to be reduced in size, to 800 pixels on the longest edge otherwise upload fails with a non-helpful miss-leading error message from what I recall.

Hi.. We always put out just a bit of cat food for him. We keep calling it him for some reason ! He likes to forage around the bird tables so we put his treat there and he picks it up every night. We don't put to much down as he will stop eating the slugs. Least that's our train of thought ..
I cant re size pictures as I'm not very good with these computer fingys..

    Charlie.

          Two things effect animals hibernation

First weather if it's room they won't hibernate
Second, weight could stop them from hibernating, I think if I remember rightly a hedghog should be around the 640 grams in weight, if it isn't it won't have enough fat to see it through the hibernation period.

But it's probably due to the weather being mild, as the squirrel's at work that I have watched collecting their winter storage are still collecting and haven't gone into hibernation yet.

Google The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and there is info on there all about young hoglets and how you can help them.As others have said if any hedgehog is below a certain weight they won't survive hibernation if the weather turns colder. They should also have details of rescue centres that might be able to take him to feed him up over the coming months and then release him in the spring when the weather improves:smile:

Good idea to put out food for him/her but if you can try to keep consistent with your efforts as it will help the hedgehog if he doesn't have to trundle around long distances looking for food.

I can't help you with the video, but have you checked the sizes of your pictures? If you're on Windows 7 I can tell you how to reduce them. :)

I am likely the most useless person here when it comes to computers and things like that.. I go on many forums and have never yet had a problem posting pictures using photo bucket. So if that doesn't work it's game over ..
            Thanks anyway.

You'll soon pick it up. :) I'm a slow improver as far as computers are concerned. I'd only been using one a few months and was still terrified of it when my son, who sorted out everything for me decided to emigrate, that was three years ago. He gave me a three month crash course before he went and then left me in the lurch. It's surprising, although I'm still wary of what I do, I'll try things and if I get myself in a mess with it I call my son-in-law instead, he groans and says what have you done now! :heehee:

Sorry, I can't help you with Photobucket either, I store all my pictures on my computer.

Hi Charlie, nice to meet you

following on from Kandy's post, perhaps if you increase the treats you are leaving (nothing fish based, normal cat food is perfect) your new friend will fatten up and go into hibernation?

Thank you.. The bigger amp fuse seems to have done the job ! As you may see in the video our wee chum the hedgehog is a big old lad ! Thanks no doubt to the feed he gets. I reckon hes well looked after. Still amazed he is around and I wonder if he will actually go into hibernation at all this year ?

Before we realised we had him we thought the droppings that suddenly appeared were cats ! So I went out and bought a trail camera to see what exactly was going on after a chap on a car forum suggested we might have a hog...

Can you tell I'm new to this to this gardening mularky ?

PS. Ignore the date stamp this is wrong. The film is not that old.
