My mum has just gone in for surgery on her hip. She's been in a great deal of pain, so she's glad she might finally get things sorted. However, she is the type who expects to bounce back quickly. Reading through your site, Daisees, I gather that recovery can be a fairly long process. I'm sure mum will be given lots of information, but whether she will actually read any of it is quite another question. Her main concern, on being admitted to hospital, was that she wasn't allowed to use any nice smellies or cosmetics! :heehee: What should we expect over the next few weeks? I understand that some people feel quite down for a while, and that pain relief can be a problem until things settle.

Well, some people do bounce back quickly but they still need to take their time about it. This might sound like a contradiction in terms but it's really not.

Thank you, Daisees. Mum's through the surgery and quite upbeat at the moment - no doubt helped by rather a lot of painkillers. It's a relief she's got this far as she called my sister just before the planned op to say she'd changed her mind and was heading off home. She didn't take to the surgeon, apparently! :heehee:

My father-in-law was 79 when he had his first hip replacement and he was walking within days of the operation. After his second hip was replaced the following year my wife remembers him asking the consultant at the (3 month?) checkup if it was now OK for him to resume cycling and digging his allotment.
