I first joined here a couple of years ago (can't for the life of me remember my username, I'm a member of various forums) but circumstances led to me being offline for a while. So, a wee bit background that explains my current situation in gardening terms. It's a bit complicated...are you sitting comfortably (wine optional)? Then I'll begin. Feel free to check out now if you can't be ar$ed, I won't be offended! When I first joined I thought I was in my "forever house" a 3 bed semi, new build, decent sized garden, backing onto woodland, blank canvas. However my husband and I separated. I knew I couldn't afford to pay a mortage on my salary so I moved out of the family home and found myself in council accomodation. So, onto the gardeny stuff. Firstly, I come from a line of gardeners. My mum gardens, I remember growing up with fresh veg out of the garden, likewise she remembers her dad (miner and ARP man) growing fruit and veg. However it feels like circumstances are always against me! I lost my "forever house", and because of the recession I'm in limbo financially. The banks will not lend to ex for him to buy me out and the housing market is dead so we can't sell. So I just need to wait... I'm currently in a "4 in a block", a sort of cottage flat - an elderly couple live downstairs, I'm upstairs. I live in a wee village in S. Lanarkshire, at the top of a hill overlooking the valley. It's a lovely quiet street , literally the last street in the estate. There are no houses opposite me, I overlook woodland running downhill to the village - it's a view to die for! I have my own front door, driveway, fair sized garden out back. The couple downstairs have the front garden but are sadly housebound so I've sort of inherited the upkeep but with limitations to what I can do because it's not mine. I'd love to stay here, but it only has 2 bedrooms and I have a girl (6) and boy (4) so we will be rehoused at some point. So again I'm in limbo. Given the situation I'm on a tight budget, I don't want to spend a fortune on the garden if I'm not staying here long term. But I don't want to live with what I've got indefinately! A scabby wooden garage, no fencing, a lawn like the rocky road to Dublin which is full of weeds. I'd just like a useable space if nothing else, but I'm itching to have a real garden. My own wee haven. Most of the folk in this street have been here forever, and apparently the auld folk in my place were good gardeners but when they passed away the later residents let it go. I have a wee raised border up the side of the drive (held back by corrogated iron :skp: ). I've tidied it up, cleared out the weeds and started planting up but I'd really like to get rid of or hide the iron sheeting. So that's where I'm at...who knows where I'll go! Sorry, I wrote a book. If you're still reading award yourself a wee dram. And..er..hi!
:D.....Hello and welcome back!...I read it all and had a glass also Talamh.... At least you don't seem to be letting things get you down :gnthb: Screening the bit of tin with some bamboo on a roll would be the easiest and you could take it with you if a move is immenent, and lots of colourful bedding for the border an instant wow
Hi & always nice to see an old face return, even if we are not sure which one it is...:hehe: :thmb: I agree with Pal, lots of bedding plants cheap & cheerful & if you get some of the hanging basket trailing ones they will hang over things & disguise them. Something like Pal says, the bamboo or wicker stuff on a roll to hide the tin, then you can take it with you & the bedding plants won't set you back too much.. Good Luck with a new home with a garden of your own too.!!:thmb: Hope you don't have to wait too long..
Heh! Thanks. It could be a couple of years before I get rehoused. Budget restraints meant nothing was done with fencing and iron but I went with the bedding plants and it's looking nice and colourful now. Pics in members gallery.
Welcome back to the forum. I'm new here too and have been made to feel part of this wonderful happy group of gardeners. Gardening is a super way to ease worries and tensions out of your life. Enjoy...
