    Hi all,

i've noticed holes appearing and flecks of light appearing on the leaves of my Japanese Acer and maple tree (can't think of the name off the top of my head - am at work at the mo).

What is it and how can I stop it?

I bought a spray thing for my roses to stop bugs and blackspot appearing, I'm hoping this also has a simple remedy!?

    Thanks

Can't help you really. It sounds like a bug of some sort. Hopefully someone with a little more info will be along soon. Have you noticed any bugs or other suspicious things on the leaves?

Well I've managed to get a pic of my acers (at last!), looking at them they are more like white spots than holes!

    What do you think?

That just might be wind damage
Are they in a windy spot?

Could well be such a combination David
We have been having such a dry hot spell recently it can't be discounted
That plus wind can cause damage like this.
The good news is that it isn't fatal :)

As you know Sam, scorch can be caused by sunlight OR wind. So we are both right.:D

Hmm well its in a shady plot really and hardly gets much sun, and our garden is not particuarly windy, but the pot is in a sheltered position.

    How very strange?

Is it in well draining soil and adequately watered?
You will appreciate that it is extremely difficult to guess at the answer to a problem without having all the details
For example, we didn't even know it was in a pot until now :)
Why I initially suggested wind was because I have a dozen or so maples showing exactly the same symptoms. They have just recently been planted, in an open position, and we have had a lot of dry weather and sun for over a month. In addition, I work off well water and watering has to be restricted, so the combination is a drying of the leaf edges and spotting such as on your plant
Come to think of it ... I had better do something about watering those poor trees later today :)

Ah right - well yes it is in a pot, planted it about 3 months ago now, it is well watered - could the spots be caused by over watering it do you think? As it stands in the shade mostly the soil doesn't dry out much and I have a auto watering system, so maybe the soil is getting too wet?

Over watering will give the same symptoms as under watering
Soil for Japanese maples should be moist but never wet .... they prefer a constant content
use your finger to test the soil ... if it is wet lay off the watering for a while. In our climate watering once a week should be adequate

Ok thanks - thats defo the reason then!

Trouble is I've planted flowers round the base of the acer plant to add colour (tis the only place I can plant flowers, as I have 2 x bunnies who eat all my flowers otherwise, so flowers can only be planted in tall pots!) So I'll lay off watering as much.
