I would hazard, a guess it is vine weevil, though I don't know if they attack Acers.
They do there work at night and hide in the day.
Garden hygiene, remove all debris round tree and only if it gets very bad spray with Permethrin.
Established plants can tolerate such attacks if only minimal. That's if it is Vine weevil of course, can't be certain. Good luck, Fonzie.

Looks like vine weevil to me too, though I thought the holes should be on the edges only. My Actaea had this problem in early June and I cleaned around the base as Fonzie says, I removed the leaves and 2 inches of mulch and removed this waste from my garden. I then sprayed with Provado and repeated a fortnight later - and it seems to have done the trick. I had heard they were difficult to get rid of, maybe I got lucky.

Definitely not vine weevil, but not too sure what it is though! Probably small snail or small caterpillar/sawfly larva, or perhaps physical damage when the leaves were young and tender.

Lavender, went out last night under the cover of darkness armed with a tourch, could not see anything crawling about. Last year i think i had it in the wrong position and i lost all the leaves, i have moved it this season so it gets afternoon sun, and not early morning, however just been out to look and about 80% of the leaves are starting to go brown on the tips.

    Maybe two different problems here?
Damage in spring (caterpillars, frost or whatever).

Now damage occurring in response to unsuitable growing conditions? Perhaps too much sun, sun on leaves when wet, incorrect compost, drying out too much in between waterings, exposure to pesticide?
Some years Acers are just a pain in the bum.

Acer still looking sick so decided to move it out of its pot and plant in the ground. The pot had pebbles on top. When i took away the pebbles the top soil was full of these....

Walnut, the soil was just full of these things, also as you can see from the photo the soil was soaking wet, could not have been draining very well. Maybe that has been my problem.

Hi Keving, I think you`ll find your problem is scorch. What happens is, you get a drop of water on the leaf and this acts like a magnifying glass for the sun which scorches the leaf. Before the hole appears you will notice a light brown area which looks like tissue paper this deteriates further leaving a hole. If it was Vine Weevil there would be no browning around the hole. David.

David, thanks for advise, looking back at the pictures there appears to be 2 differant problems, as Lavender suggested, there is the scorching problem and the clean eaten looking leaves. Have moved now and planted in ground, looking a bit worse this evening, but lets see what happens.
