I have a muture holly hedge which has to be removed and hopefully replanted some 6 feet back of its original position.it was around 8 feet high and in good condition,i have reduced its height to about 5 feet in september,to make the job more manageable, i am not looking forward to this job but would love to save it rather than replace. i have a mini digger to hand so dont mind a bit of extra digging. has anyone any advise on this matter or is it doomed to failure.

    Hi and Welcome

How old is the hedge , is the secret if its very old more than 15 years in the same spot you have a problem you will probably have a 50 50 chance But you have a digger so as much rootball as possible use antthing to keep the root ball together and plant at the same depth TLC ALL NEXT YEAR water everyweek in the summer they may drop every leaf with the shock its somthing holly does but they should re grow.

Its got 1 chance so I would give it a go

I have moved holly but I done it over 12 months measured 2 feet from the main stem in a circle then dug a trench all around and cut through main roots ,re fill in then over the 12 months the tree /bush produces finer roots thats when I moved it and re planted same depth re dug out the trench under cut then used a very large platic sheet to keep the root ball together .

Little tip use a old blanket to wrap around the bush stops you from getting to many prikles off the holly when re planting

We like photos on here if possible???

    Catch ya 2012 byeeee

thanks for the reply, the hedge must be 20 years plus forgot to add that the front of the hedge is close to the road so digging this side will be difficult, will send some pics . what depth did u dig to and would u try to move as many as possible at once as the hedge is about 10 metres long

Dam what a project. I certainly give you hats off. Spruce seems to have the directions down pat. Good luck to you dear.
