We have a holly tree we panted this summer and it keeps falling over. We live in Scotland and have been getting lots of rain so the soil is very loose although we do have mainly clay soil. It is also in a positon where it catches the wind. I just wondered if you have any tips on how to protect it. I asssume as it was just planted the roots haven't had a chance to establish themselves.

    Hi Princesskasren,

You need to stake the tree with the stake being at 45*angle with it pointing into the direction of the strongest winds. That way, when the holly is blown back it drives the stake further in thereby keeping it secure.

This is a link to the RHS site showing different methods

I strongly agree with Lollipop, The tree will be top heavy and the leafs will drop unless you add plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the planting hole to help with establishing new roots. also the tree might benefit from a haircut to reduce the amount of stress it is undergoing to to the replanting. Another holly of the oposite sex will ensure berries if you have a female. The Kings are female and the Queens are male.

" The Kings are female and the Queens are male ", true. Except for any of the Van Tol varieties which are Hermaphroditic. Which means they are self fertile.:gnthb:

    Hi
Don't know if this will help but this is a really blog good post on how to remedy a tree that is falling over. We have an old apple that was suffering and it looks a lot better (more upright) now.

    Good luck
