We have just been quoted £500 for contents and building insurance on our house.
If we lived in a castle instead of a 3 bed semi I could understand it.

As it really gone up so much ?

Any advise who to try ,this was with TSB Lloyds

    Can't pay £500 :(

Do another quote Lyn, in fact do several. Go to www.moneysupermarket.com or www.comparethemarket.com. You'll find cheaper quotes than that I bet.

In March my motorbike insurance went up despite 3 years no claims. I did a search online and came up with several quotes cheaper than my existing broker (cheaper by £100). I went back to them and told them this and they matched it. Rare in insurance companies these days when customer loyalty means zilch.

We just saved over £200 on our car insurance by using comparethemarket. Other half (who drives) always let the same policy renew year after year. We realised it kept going up every year never down so we had a search online and changed as soon as we realised we were being ripped off.

I change my household insurance annually also to whoever is giving the best deal at the time!

Give them a phone call, also ring round, but be careful, make sure that you get like for like cover.

Our house insurance came in at around 500 quid, but managed to get it down to nearer 300. Unfortunately, the new policy didn't have search and locate for leaks, and shortly after, we had a leak  (in the kitchen) and the insurance co wouldn't pay for the plumber to locate and fix the leak.

So far....we've had the leak fixed by a plumber for 80 quid, and had weeks of drying equipment. This next 2 weeks or so, they are coming to put back the kitchen.

I'll let you know what the premium will be next year!

On the car insurance front, mine is due in the next couple of days. The re-quote I got from current co was 500 quid, then it went up to 650 cos my circumstances had changed. Doing the compare sites, I've got it down to nearer 350/400 quid.

I also recently renewed my AA cover. They wanted 103 quid, but I went on their website, and new breakdown customers could get the same level for 77.25. I rang them up to cancel, and take out new cover, and they said 'oh, I can do you it for the offer price, just give us a call each year, and there will be a reduction on renewal price'

I think the moral of the story is a 5 min phone call can save money. Sorry for my slight rant, but I feel quite strongly that people take things in their renews as the price they have to pay.

    Please have a ring round!

I paid £90 for contents cover with one company (I don't need buildings cover as we rent our pad). When it was up for renewal Nationwide offered it to me for over £250, and made out it was a bargain. I just laughed at them and walked away.

I used to work for an insurance company-checking peoples claims and running MIAFTR checks ( yeah dead exciting lol), and although I wasn't selling the stuff I know where I used to work the advisors who sell the new policies are paid more than a customer service guy and the renewals are automated. The "New Business" team can give away loads of discount but the renewals aren't even looked at by a person unless you ring and ask them to-and even then most can't be bothered because new business is more highly rated than account retention.

    Hi Lyn,

That is way too high. We have home and contents insurance that is near the top spec that can be got and it only cost £339.

It is a set policy with the building covered up to a million (although you wouldn't get more than the rebuilding cost), contents covered up to £75,000, valuable up to £10,000, money, credit cards, clothing and personal effects and all risks.

Of course, the premiums can be different depending on your postcode but they shouldn't be that much different.

Shop around and you should get a better deal. If not then you are most welcome to PM me and I can give you the details of my insurance broker. :gnthb:

    Good luck :)

Thanks everyone got a very similar deal for £ 360.
    Just shows.
You have to look around for everything.
The same thing happened last year I phoned them and told them it was to much and they knocked £90 off but this year it's just gone far to high.
I can't be bothered with them anymore.
So they have lost us after years.

I changed from Lloyds TSB this year after being told my premium was going up to £600+ for a 2 bed detached bungalow! I'd been with them for nearly 20 years and they just came up with a standard "we're competitive" reply, so I kicked them into touch. Glad you got a better deal, Lyn.

When I tried to phone to cancel the re-newel I couldn't get through, surprise surprise.
So I went to the local TSB Bank.
She got through and they offered me a "better deal" , to late LOL we had already sorted it.
Why can't they just offer the better deal in the first place and save everyone so much time and trouble.
    Another customer they have lost.
