Was down in Homebase this morning and they had nice little Jamie Oliver Beauregard sweet potato slips at 3 for £4.99. It's not very often I think their prices are worth paying but I did this time. I've grown those decorative sweet potatoes, Blackie and that golden one (or rather watched them shiver and sulk pathetically all summer) but thought these might be a bit less nesh and almost as decorative. Not banking on getting my dinner from them, though.

I've put the three in a massive dolly tub and am going to tie them up a cane wigwam - if they grow. It could go inside in September for an extra few weeks growing.

Hi Madahhlia , years ago I`ve found a spudszilla (a sweet potatos the size of a melon) and try to grow it , with no luck as late I`ve found out that they where treated with radiation to actually stop peoples growing them .....
then I tryed again with a carabbian spuds and some economy tesco sweet potatoes (£2 for a bag)....half went straight in the soil and the other half started in the water .
the one straight in the soil where all eated by worms and slugs , but the one grown in the water all healty and growned up to October outside , but they just incesed the size and nothing more , they need lots of heat to grow but they are really decorative plant.
start them in the water .

You dont actually need the potato, once its shooted you can cut off the rooted stems and grow them on.
I've done this, but I think we need a much longer summer and a much warmer one to make it worthwhile.
Plus I cant stand sweet potato, so wasn't that bothered:biggrin:
