I have been to Wilko, and bought a pot of their "natural rooting powder", fondly imagining it would be hormone rooting powder like "Strike". It seems to be made of seaweed though.

Has hormone rooting powder been banned? A little online searching seems to indicate it has, God knows why. I would like some.

Is the alternative worth anything? Is there some way of getting the original?

I dont bother with the modern stuff.

The old stuff had a fungicide in it to stop the cuttings rotting, but they banned the fungicide so now its just a bit of over priced seaweed feed.

I dont think it has any growth hormones either.

I'm tight, so I use crushed willow stems for rooting and cinnamon powder for anti fungal.
however, having said that, if the cuttings are taken at the right time of year, you don't need any of that

I didn't know the hormone had been banned. I bought a new tub last year and didn't read the ingredients, I have convinced myself it works because one batch of cuttings I didn't use it and they failed. The second batch worked with the powder. I've just been and checked my tub and no hormone, just seaweed. Maybe it does work but I still feel ripped off.

I bought a new tub because my years old tin was going rusty, it had the hormone and captan fungicide in it too, grrrr.

They tell you it only lasts a few months as well, so you are supposed to replace it fairly often.

Captan was banned a good few years ago I believe so your old tin must have been ancient.

1-naphthaleneacetic acid, as used to be included in STRIKE, has been banned because apparently it's persistent. I found STRIKE to be fairly useless anyway.
Indole-3-butyric acid is a much better, fully biodegradable rooting hormone. Some rooting gels include this artificial hormone and I have found CLONEX to be particularly effective. I think there are powders with indole-3-butyric acid, but I prefer the gel.
