My neighbour uses her hosepipe every day and during the icy weather the water left inside freezes. Would using a reel drain the water out of the hose as it's wound up?

Only if the nozzle is removed from the end of the hose so the water can drain out as it's wound up.

I can't imagine using a hose without a reel . They do have a life of their own and tie themselves in knots . A reel would be better , I always turn the tap off on the wall and then depressurise the hose by squeezing the trigger . Now as shiney said this will not empty the hose 100 ,and removing the nozzle or gun every time would be a bit of a pain. If your neighbour must use the hose everyday , I think a good quality reel and make a thermal jacket to cover it in icy conditions would work.

If you have a non water stop connector on the hose it might be easier. Just unclip the nozzle before winding the hose up. It should remove at least 50% of the water.

I dont use a reel as such I have something similar to that which is in Linz's link, if you can imagine two of these screwed to a wall sideways on about 4ft apart.
It's pretty quick and easy to just wind the hose around them just leave one end connected to the tap.
Mine are just made out of two pieces of wood roughly shaped to take the hose.

It's been there for years and I've never had a hose split through freezing although I could see a problem trying to use it if it was plugged with ice.

I think the only way to drain the pipe fully would be to remove the end from the tap and wind it up very slowly.

I have a hose reel attached to the side of the Garage and found that as I raised the hosepipe to the height of the reel, the water naturally drained out of the pipe as I reeled it on. I've never had an problems with ice in the hosepipe but then I've never used it in cold weather.:dunno::snork:

Thanks all for the information. My neighbour's hose doesn't have a nozzle attached as she uses it to fill the bath tubs (for drinking) in her barn yard for her pet cows, it's also used to wash down the same yard. She's of mature years and I've watched her struggle with this on more than one occasion. At the moment she hangs some of the hose from her fencing but it's not much help in draining the water. I'll pass on your suggestions, thanks again. :)

Without a nozzle it would drain fairly well when winding it on a hosereel.

A hosereel that sits on the ground wouldn't really be good enough so she could fix one to the wall (or fence if she has to), but it's best to fix it close to the tap.

One that reels straight out from the wall. This one is better if you want to reel straight out from the wall but has a downside that it will bounce away from the wall, at the bottom, when you wind it unless you have a bracket to hold the bottom.

and one that reels flat to the wall. This is better if you want it to go out sideways, and it doesn't bounce away from the wall, but it's always best to have the bracket that it shows on the wall to the bottom right for the hose to run through. This allows you to run the hose through it and take it in any direction. They haven't positioned it correctly because it should be closer to the edge of the wall so that it can be run around the corner without the wall damaging the hose.

                  I have both styles. :dbgrtmb:

Thanks @shiney. I presume the hose on the first one isn't attached to the tap?

It isn't in that picture (pulled it from the internet) but there should be a connector in the middle of the side that you can't see and the hose would run from that to the tap.

If the weather is suitable tomorrow (and I remember :old: ) I'll take a photo of ours with the connections showing.
