Yes the yellow is normal. Shade gardner I am with overwhelming number of Hostas. Protection part---no they are suppose to go to sleep over the winter. All may go to ground flat out and rot off at the base. When I am raking leaves the old dead hostas leaves come right along with the pile. Over the winter Hostas double up in size underground, and come up larger than the year before. This is why I have so many, after a few years, you can split them easy and put more in other areas, and other areas, and other areas. I do have a wide variety also, there are so many nice ones.

Some of my shade hostas are still going strong, but any exposed hostas are as good as gone now.

Been a reasonable year for hostas though:)

Yes it has been a good year for hostas. I only have hostas in shade. However, there is a variety that can handle the sun, don't know it, don't need to know it.

Buy some cheap beer darling, pour out some in a shallow dish, old lid, around different areas. The slugs love beer.
