As we can't have houseplants due to our windowsills being on the outside, we like to put houseplants on the windowsills of the Baffa, our outdoor living room.

The Busy Lizzies are looking a little said having made it through the winter and their second summer so we decided to brighten up the ledge with something soft and ferny so got a Cyperis alternifolio and an Asparagus falcatus ...

LOL ...our window ledges are outdoor as well - and because we only have voile type curtains we get the advantage of seeing our potted plants inside and outside ....I find that most houseplants survive on the sills, but have to be careful to shut the outer shutters on the windows in full sun otherwise the plants frizzle !! mind you we partially close the shutters anyway in the hot weather, just leaving enough space for shafts of light to come into the rooms...... our HOT HEAT continues it hasn't dropped much below 36° for about 10 days ...had a blip in August but not for long !! M-L

Hi, M-L. Our shutters are on the inside ... we've had them replicated as they were in olden days. The shutters have two sections with the central one opening separately. The only difference is we've had glass put in that section ... in times past there was none! We keep them closed till the sun moves around, too.

The houseplants above are shaded by the Jacaranda from the morning sun and the deck by the afternoon sun, only getting a wee bit of evening sun. As you can see, we have bamboo blinds so, like you, can enjoy the plants from both sides!

We've been fortunate this summer. Right now we're 32C and we've not gone over 34C this year! Forecast says there may be a shower or two the first of the week, but I'll believe that when I see it. I assume you're air conditioned?

We have portable units, found them easier than trying to knock through metre and half stone walls....less mess for one thing !!

I'm off to check the oven, I've a giant sticky toffee pudding in there at the moment, and a tuna and salmon terrine waiting to go in the bain marie ...it's all go :D  M-L
