I think this is a little house sparrow, unless someone knows better?

Whis, the colouring around the primaries on the wing and possible white wing bar make me think it is a juvenile female Chaffinch, looking back at you male Chaffinch pic there are similarities but sparrows are variable to confuse things.

    You might well be right
I thought it might be a young female Greenfinch, but wifey and her sister insisted on sparrow
Your suggestion makes me think [IMG]
    Any others in agreement?

I am inclined to agree with you now Whis, as the looking at it again the head isn't 'square ' enough for a Chaffinch and the little bit of colour on the wing is more yellow than white so it probably is a Greenfinch.

Hi Whis4ey,looking at my books and you bird I think it is either a Female Greenfinch or Female Chaffinch. As the markings are not in full view it is hard to tell, but it is a cracking photo whatever [IMG] [IMG]

It has been identified for me as a young female chaffinch.
When I look at my bird books I think that is probably right [IMG]

When was the pic taken whis4ey?

Its just that surely by now all birds have got adult plumage, so the ID should be easy, I would guess. [IMG]
