Yes they are tough little things. They grow really well on my poor chalk soil, they love the full sun but don't mind being in partial shade. I tried them in the crevices of stone walls and they like that as well. They are one of my favourites :)

I can send you some as well. I have about 3 or 4 types, but I'm not sure what they are! I've moved them around the garden so much recently, they are now in my veg patch waiting to go back into my new beds (maybe in the spring). I know I grew some from the free seed I got from the RHS one year but am completely disorganised with labels.

There are only about 17 species of Semepervivum, but there are over 900 named cultivars in the National Collection. We had over 200 different ones, but like JWK many of them have lost their labels.
Jovibarba are very similar, but the flowers are slightly different and they have a slightly different growth habit. They are often more expensive to buy than Semps because they are slower to make new plants.

We are having problems with the ones in the garden at present as the blackbirds take great delight in ripping them up. We used to blame the hens for doing this, but now they are confined and still it happens. It is very annoying really.

Oh I just remembered that Wisley had quite a few in their trials ground (last year I think). I took some photos of the ones I really liked, I will have to try and find the photos if I can.
