    Hi,

Can anyone recommend some houseplants which don't spread out too much, but are still a decent size, to fit on window sills which are 10 inches wide (i.e. between window and curtains)? Something which grows mainly upwards, and/or which can be trimmed to keep them narrow? Ideally ones which do well on a north facing window.

    Thanks!

I don't really have any suggestions (I rarely bother closing the curtains, other than our bedroom ones, so I don't mind if my plants are wider than the windowsills), but do bear in mind that if your curtains are closed at night, it can get significantly colder on the windowsills than it is in the room, and that's generally not good for houseplants.

Sansaveira ... in comes in many colours nowadays but buy a bigger one as they are slow growing. Vy the way, which way does the window face?

I agree with Victoria, sansevieria will do well there. I have mine in a north facing window and they have been fine for 20 plus years. Ours are above a radiator which isn't on at night, so fluctuating temperatures doesn't seem to bother them.

We also have a euphorbia trigona that's a similar age and it does ok as well.

            Then Sansaveira should be fine.

Hi @alligatorlizard , welcome to the forum! :)

Pothos (Devil's Ivy) is a superb houseplant and can be grown any way you like. On a narrow windowsill you might want to guide it upwards along the side of the window and then turn it to frame the window.

Pothos looks lush and green and will tolerate low light and even neglect.

Google photo to give an idea (you could fix the stems inside the window recess rather than on the room side wall if the curtains are on the way):
