Easy, contact http://www.dogstrust.org.uk A national organisation with a lot of kennels spread about.. Also contact your local rescue centres.. You would be amazed but cockers are handed in because the are such active bouncy little things...! Alway great to have a dog but to give a rescue dog a home is so rewarding.. They vet and choose you and animals very thoroughly so you won't end up with an unknown... Please think about that option..

Also try http://www.rspca.org.uk/findapet#onSubmitSetHere but you may need to wade through page after page of Staffies to find a Cocker Spaniel (what we're after next spring so aware of costs for KC reg. pups).

That's why we want one, so we can go on 3 or 4 walks a day with play. Made final decision watching 2 Cockers chasing sticks thrown into a Devon river a couple of months ago, one would go for the stick, the other would go for the ducks.

Or you could apply to these guys, whom I volunteer for
        http://www.caessr.org.uk/

        The adoption fee is £170

Edited to add, there are more dogs than shown on the website, as they are coming in all the time.

Also please don't pay one, there is a high probability it will come from a puppy farm or illegally imported from Eastern Europe and are often in very poor health.

Dont judge a book by its cover.
If you are precise in what you want, then you pay the price.

Personally I'd judge a dog by temperament and size.

All about the hybrid vigour. We paid 50 quid for a half weimaraner quarter Belgian shepherd and quarter rottweiler from a farm in Edzel. And she is a big massive black thing with amber eyes and 2 different coats. She is now 13 years old and is the best dog ive ever met. Her brothers are 2 stone heavier and she is around 7 stone, maybe more.

I guess my point is specific breeds come with specific problems.
We took in a white Labrador(well, yellow) and while he was very expensive over 500 for the original owners, his hips are terrible as he has been bred for the white colours. He is beautiful but going to be shot out like a dry pump in a few years.
If only someone had bred for vigour and health.

As said, all dogs can have issues, but if you go to a rescue centre you will have time to get to know the dog before they even think of letting it home with you.. If you have a local rescue near you why not volunteer as a dog walker for them, that way you would find out all about dogs and some of their funny traits.. It is a very rewarding thing to do I can guarantee you that..

Have a Google and see if there are any Spaniel rescue centres near where you live because they often have dogs handed in ranging in ages and you might be able to pick up a young dog,but not sure if you would find a puppy:smile:

Sadly because of very bad breeding practices over the years, and the KC very lax none policing to registration and breeding practices, it took a telly documentary and a public outcry to finally get incestuous breeding practices out of the showring/pedigree registration!

If you buy from a breeder here's the health checks that breeder should have done http://www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk/health.htm and the breeder should show you the results, as a breeder saying 'they've been health checked' doesn't mean anything, take hips for example, the score should be low and you should be given score for each hip.... As both hips need to be roughly the same and not uneven.

And expect the good breeder to ask you many questions about your knowledge, your home, garden etc... As a good breeder will want to know what homes they are sending their dogs, and want to minimise the changes of it needing rehoming at a later stage etc.

I'm a great advocate of rescue dogs, I've had several now myself with some all they need is TLC and commitment on training..

The two in my avatar are both rescues, and I wouldn't be without them... They have been rewarded with the PDSA Gold Medal a very high honour indeed, PDSA have issued 23 Gold Medals, and two of them sit on my lounge wall.
