So Im fed up with working fir voluntary organisations, fed up with the politics, abuse of trust and funds, not feeling valued etc and want to do something voluntary on my own.

Ive got this idea of finding a local homeowners garden and making it wildlife friendly to help wildlife more than the owners. Ive been stockpiling plants etc for a number of months from my own garden and so don't need any funds etc.

The problem is that i cant travel very far at the moment and i don't know how to find said home owner and their garden.

A tricky one. If anyone has any ideas i would greatly appreciate them.

Is the land share scheme still running?

Or how about having a look around your local area, see if any of the gardens look like they were once tended but have now got out of control. Perhaps a local elderly can't manage any more, and would love some kind soul to make it beautiful for them again.

Why not try chatting to the manager of one of your local Essex Wildlife Trust centres?

        Brentwood
        Thorndon Countryside Centre
        Tel: 01277 232944

        email:- [email protected]

Or their place at the Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre
        Essex Wildlife Trust
        Tel: 01708 520364

        email:- [email protected]

Or the Langdon Visitor Centre, at Basildon
        Essex Wildlife Trust
        Tel: 01268 419103

        [email protected]

Or the Chafford Gorges Nature Park at Grays
        Tel: 01375 484016
        email:- [email protected]

You will need to explain what you want and also tell them that you don't want to volunteer there or become a member. You just want to help private people with making their gardens more wildlife friendly.

They may allow you to put up a poster. Or even have some ideas for you.

        Good luck :blue thumb:

Me and Essex Wildlife Trust have history. I was volunteering at a certain visitor centre for nearly 3 years and they did something unforgivable. So I took them to the press after getting ignored by the mangers.

I'd rather go alone to be honest.

What about asking the council about using some of the grass verges or playing fields or round abouts, some local farmers with a bit of land they don't use, be carefull about the subsiby payments

Do you know if you have a local gardening club? Maybe they have members who are no longer able to do much in their own garden and would appreciate your ideas?

            Postcard in the local newsagents?

A notice in your local Freecycle?

Decide your maximum radius, make up and print off some leaflets and do a leaflet drop?

I guess a stall at the market/s clearly stating what you are about and some flyers scattered on the table so that those interested can take one and get in touch with you.

Nursing/care homes and not just for the elderly? Schools/nurseries/play groups, it's great to get kids involved. And Clueless' idea of going round the local area and seeking tired looking gardens. Fantastic concept and all the best with it!
