How do i make chalky soil for my grapevine?

    hallo,

    i have clay soil but my vine woud like chalky soil -- so how do i create chalky soil in a large tub?

    Err, why do you want chalky soil, chalky soil is alkaline but grapes are fairly tolerant I believe as long as the soil isn't acidic.

      I would think get hold of some limestone chippings and mix 50:50 with JI 3 and use this mixture to fill your tub.
      I suspect the grape vine roots will be out of the drainage holes and off into the soil within a season or so.

      dont waste your time i dont think you need chalky soil

          Grape vines are remarkably tough and tolerant of soil conditions; I've seen them growing in everything from well mulched borders in a greenhouse, to sunbaked thin soil on schist.
          Have been advised that you should throw a dead animal into the planting hole toget the vineoff to a good start.
          They are long lived and tolerant of savage pruning.
          For eating, grapes do better in better conditions, for wine they seem to be better if older and growing in poorer conditions.
