Could anyone advise me on when and how I thin my Turnips ? How big should they be and can I replant the thinnings ? I've never grown them before and am a beginner, Any advice would be great ! Thanks :)

It is extremely difficult to transplant most root crops succesfully.

Thin when less than one inch high to 4-6 inches apart for an early sowing and 8-10 inches for a maincrop sowing. As for all brassica crops turnips do best in firm ground so the sooner you thin the least disturbance there will be.

I watched the cookery demonstrations on the Hampton Court TV programme and some cook/gardener type person was talking about the latest craze in cookery - 'micro vegetables' - which are basically thinnings sprinkled on a tiny portion of cooked food

So don't forget you can eat the thinnings, although personally I haven't tried turnip.
