Gravatar (a portmanteau of globally-recognized avatar) is a service for providing globally-unique avatars and was created by Tom Preston-Werner. Since 2007, it has been owned by Automattic, having integrated it into their WordPress.com blogging platform.
Thank you. But that doesn't tell me how I can use it to universally generate the same avatar... That was the real crux of my question... ETA: Thank you to whomsoever moved the thread.
The link may help you below if it's for an avatar but you must activate an account first Gravatar - Globally Recognized Avatars
@TaraMaiden As far as I can make out you need to register with Gravatar ( Gravatar - Globally Recognized Avatars ) unless already done and then the forum software needs to be changed to allow Gravatar use. A plug in may be available. First is easy, second, I would think, problematic.
@TaraMaiden Apologies didn't express that particularly well. I should have made it clear that the plug in would be for the forum software and not for you as an individual user. A plug in is basically a prewritten computer program that you download and install on your device to let you do something, for example an app for your phone. Nothing at all to do with Fuchsias.
As Nigel says it would more than likely need an admin to install the GRavatar plug in on the forum software running on their server. For all I know it may already be there but not enabled - suck it and see? What have you tried so far @TaraMaiden ?
Hi John, it must be working as my laptop asks me if I want to use plug in once I press ok and that's it...unless it's something built in to my actual laptop
I'm just wondering then, why it's an option on this forum, to select...? I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to enable it... ...After a bit of 'digging around'..... I use a Google Chromebook which apparently doesn't support ANY plug-ins, except 'Flash' which apparently has to be enabled manually, it's not automatic...
@TaraMaiden select 'Avatar' from the drop down list when you select your name at the top of the page: Then enter your email address associated with your GRavatar in the next pop up: Click "Use Gravatar" then "Okay" and that should do it.
Hi TaraMaiden, @JWK as given you good directions for an Avatar. Otherwise I had good chrome on my laptop that came with flash player plug in and it was enabled, so that's why I was asked if I wanted it...after double checking. To enable it here's how you do it with Google chrome if you don't want to use JWK's advice Enable Flash Player in Chrome. Open your Google Chrome browser, type chrome://plugins in the address bar and press Enter. Scroll down to Plugins. Here you can select Disable, Enable Adobe Flash Player and also check the Always allowed check-box, if you wish.
Hang on.... I'll give @JWK's advice a go.... brb!! ETA: "No Gravatar found for current email address." Yet I registered that avatar on the gravatar website. Ya know, I might just give up....
