Hello everyone, I just thought I'd go with the flow and introduce myself.

I've been a young keen gardener for a few years now, it's only the past 2 years where I have really put a focus into my outside space and tried to really make the most.

This year has been by far the best in terms of success from seeds. Sometimes life can keep us away from home and young seedlings may miss out on a drink at times but I've really made an effort this year and it has paid off.

I've had success from seed and have a garden filling up with calendula, lobelia, limnanthes, tumbling tom tomatoes, courgette (green and golden) beetroot chioggia, carrots, chives, garlic chives, spinach, Swiss chard, basil, parsley, coriander, cucamelon, pea waverex, borlotti beans, rocket, sunflower, dahlia.

All the above has had to find homes within a standard urban terraced garden, and with the restrictions of space, I have also now taken on an allotment to hopefully up my future glut.

Bringing 3 chickens into the space has helped this year because they eat most of what gets pulled up or cut back, and they repay me with manure in return, so if anyone is considering chickens, I'd say go for it!

Anyway, that is me up to now, I'm looking forward to browsing through topics and hopefully picking some experienced brains when needed.!

Certainly sounds like a bumper success for you this year. Well done to you :ccheers:

There are a number on GC who keep hens, myself included, and they certainly earn their keep with their antics and rewards (eggs and manure) :chicken: Which breed/s do you have?

Looking forward to seeing you around the forums.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks @"M" I'm hoping to get my allotment plot tidied asap and get what I can into the ground so that I may well achieve either a late Autumn or at least a decent early Spring harvest. Time will tell.

I have no frills, commercial brown hens. I shopped around and to be honest, I wasn't looking for show winning birds or the like, I was after reliable layers, and these girls have really done the job for me. I could not believe how cheap they are to keep. Their feed lasts and in terms of their eggs and the manure they produce, I have so far only found pros to keeping them. I am allowed up to 12 on my allotment plot. I won't go that mad, but I'm thinking of building a tractor pen, so that once they have cleared an area, I can pull the pen along to a new area for them to work on. Again, another pro in favour of having them. Especially for us gardeners!
