How do you support your tomatos? Do you just use a stake? How do you attach the plant to the tree? I've read about using chicken wire, does anyone do it like that?

I'm asking because i've never grown anything that needed support before, and i'm not sure where to start.

I use ordinary canes and build a trelis structure. The trelis supports the tom plants and only needs minimal tieing. Where it may be considered necessary to tie, do so loosely.

A thickish bamboo cane, planted at the same time you put the tomato plant in, should be fine. I use electrical wire, doubled over so it's not too fine and doesn't cut into the stem.

If you have a Wilko's near you you can get professional plastic reusable ties at 99p for 50. Fully adjustable, very easy and last for years.

Hi Sarra, fasten a wire across the greenhouse as high as it can go,put a peg in your soil or grow bag and fasten twine from peg to wire, as the plant grows gently guide it round the twine. J

I use old pairs of tights cut into ribbons for tying my plant to canes etc. they are strong enough to do the job but gentle to the plants! [IMG] 02

Newbie green, if you are growing in grow-bags or similar... I took a tip from here last year, and planted out my tom plants in half a grow-bag (i.e. fold the grow bag in half and cut round the middle) using this method you can push a cane in quite deeply at the same time as you plant the tomato plant, so the cane stays stable - although I was growing them in a mini-greenhouse, so the canes were supported by the top shelf which I left in, but I think they would have stayed up anyway.
I'm not sure who originally suggested this now, but it's genius! The bags don't seem to dry out as much and don't take as much space up, and I presume there is more room for the plant's roots.
