I have been reading conflicting information as to if black bamboo is invasive in the uk?

    I’ve been offered 3 x 6m plants with 55cm root balls.

I’m located in Mossley. It’s grey and wet most of the year.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Very invasive K78 :)

In my experience black bamboo runs as much as any other.

I would decline the offer. :)

Is it feasible to have plants this large in planters?

The ground is also a type of sedimentary rock. Glacial river bed. Could it run through that? I can’t dig through it. It’s brutal.

I’ve got a big area to screen and 3 x 6m bamboo for £60 is a good price.

I have had Phyllo nigra in the same place for 6 years and it hasn't spread anywhere but the Golden Bamboo phyllo aurea has.

It can run the other way if it wants too. It’s a 25m long sloping bank that is heavily wooded leading down to a busy road.

Seem a bargain at 6m for £20 each and they are local.

If they haven’t spread in Kent and Dorset I’m guessing northwest should be ok.

It’s a risk that’s all. Big problems if it does run K78.:noidea:

Are there any legal restrictions on bamboo?

What happens if it pops up in a neighbours garden?

All I can say is it romped like crazy inside 3 years at a friend’s smallholding and it was invasive here too. When I dug it out ....after just 2:summer’s...the roots had travelled more than a few metres and were popping up amidst other plants!!:) P. Aurea was the same.

So, try it K78 by all means....let us know how it goes. Maybe google the plant first though:)

If it pops up in your neighbour’s garden I guess you will simply have confirmed its thuggishness

I can only advise don’t plant it :)

I have a small p. Aurea in a big builders bucket. That seems to run everywhere I’ve seen it planted.

I would be happy if the Nigra run 2-3 metres and stopped but I know it doesn’t work like that unfortunately.

How effective are the plastic root barriers?

I have a “thing” about invasive plants K78.

Been tempted by bamboo, artemisia, euphorbia Griffithi, etc., and then spent months clearing out the runners. When I was new to gardening I was about to plant a rhus typhina, the stag horn sumach, until a knowing person urged me not to. Glad I took heed because I now know how fast they spread and how difficult they are to eradicate.
So, I can only suggest caution and hope others take heed too :)

I’m definitely taking your advice on board. I appreciate it.

The area is around 3ft higher than my garden so they couldn’t run that way. The area to the other side is 25 metres of trees and hedgerow. My neighbours garden starts around 3m up the bank.

We both want a dense thick screen.
