    I've just moved into a new property and now have a rough, patchy, weedy back lawn that I'd like to rip-up and replace. I've read the posts on here and now have a pretty good idea of how to go about it;

    Rip up the old, put in a skip,
    level (pretty level anyway),
    Bring-in top soil, gently compact and rake the top
    Water and lay turf

    The area is about 35 feet x 35.

    My son will help me so we need to book some time off work, 2 questions;

    1/. How long do you think this will take us from start to finish?
    2/. Do you think 1 large skip will be enough?

    Hello Apprentice. I surely admire your faith in us.
    I think you've got the method right, and 1 skip should do the job, but as to how long it will take you - well! what age are you ? what age is your son ? how many tea breaks are you planning on ? what will be the speed of progress ? Too many variables ! But good luck with the project.

    Removing turf without the proper spade is very hard work.
    With an ordinary spade you can end up taking too much soil. That'll fill your skip quickly!
    You should be able to get one from a hire shop.

    First, cut grass to about 2". 3 days later apply lawn weed and feed. 3 days later cut grass and cut each week. end of July, apply lawn weed and feed, cut grass.

    In Sept if it still looks bad then returf as per above.

    Its not the best time to returf in the late spring or summer.

    I would go with bean counter on this but with a slight differance, personally I'd scarify what you have, weed and feed it. Then I would seeds it all over and topdress it with a washed sand and top soil mix 20/100 (20 sand 100 soil). You can also use the top dressing to take out any hollows etc. I would use a plank to compress the top dressing.

    Digging off would be a last resort for me.
