In our area in Scotland we Had four bins.
    Blue bin--paper,plastic,etc.
    Brown bin--Garden Refuse.
    Green bin---General Household waste.
Black Box --Glass bottles,Broken electrical items.
We now have been presented with a grey bin.
It's a bin within a bin,the idea is the small bin is kept in the house with a compostable liner. All food waste is placed in this small bin then emptied into the bigger bin outside the house,to be collected weekly, fine I thought.:blue thumb:.

I received the grey bin last week and I have been using it as per instructions.
The bin has a Ratchet type plastic locking system at the bottom of the handle,in theory you put the food waste into the bin then close the lid locking it with plastic ratchet:blue thumb:.

First time I used It the Ratchet Broke !!!!:oopss:.
I'm thinking, how many of these broken open bins are going to be deposited on street pavements ??.:dunno:.
These bins will be a feeding station for Gulls,Crows.Foxes, mice, and eventually,Rats.:runforhills:.

The Black boxes,I do not like:nonofinger:.I can see my Nosy neighbours passing my black box on the pavement, slowing down, looking in the box and thinking,
'Oh I See That Mc Tavish is back on the Whiskey And Becks again.':ccheers:.
The wife has got me Paranoid.. she said,"You Can't put all those bottles out at the same time!!, the neighbours will think your an alcoholic"!!!:rolleyespink:.

How are your Councils faring with their Recycle Zero Waste Programmes ???.

      We have four wheelie bins:

      1) a grey one for general waste
      2) a brown one for recycled glass, tin, plastic, etc
      3) a blue one for recycling paper
      4) a grey one with a pink lid for recycling garden waste and also kitchen waste
      (including all kinds of food).

They do take up a bit of space on the drive!

In addition to the above, there is also a small composter for use indoors (like yours), which I keep in the kitchen and empty into the compost [IMG]

We have a green one for recycled tins, paper cardboard and plastic bottles.
A black one for general waste destined for the incinerator.
A green one with a yellow stripe (which I pay extra for), for garden rubbish.
A smallish black one for food waste.

The food waste ones are often seen all over the place after a gale.

I still have to take my bottles to the bottle bank, but then if they gave me a bin I doubt it would be big enough.:)

      We have:

      Black bin for household waste.
      Green bin for garden waste
Black box for bottles and jars
      Green box for paper
White bag for plastic and tins

I don't mind recycling at all but what does annoy me is if my household bin is full and you put any extra bags out, like when we had a party they won't take it. I phoned the council and was told if you can't put it in the bin then you need to pay for a larger bin and I was also told that if the bin lid won't close they will not take it either. Also why can the bin collection people not put the bins out of the way so I don't gave to leave my car half on the road and half on the path whilst I get out to move them so as I can get on my drive :gaah:

        We have :
1 large green wheelie bin- garden cuttings.
1 Black wheelie bin- household rubbish.
1 Square plastic box- paper and glass.
1 Green plastic bag- tins and plastic (though only bottles).

Any plastic wrapper or anything that you think might/should be recyclable is a list as long as your arm. :nonofinger:

We also a little plastic green box 10''x 8''x 4'' with a hinge and a metal handle, which comes with green bags to go inside, for any foodstuff. which is for composting, which we do ourselves. :blue thumb:

Our binmen are very good, if we forget any of the boxes, as they are situated just down the side of our bungalow, they will collect it.:ThankYou:

Our first collection is about 7.30am, which sets off the dog. :help: all in all we are vey happy with the binmen.:dbgrtmb:

We are so very lucky. Only a single bin in the "dustbin" cupboard which is emptied every Tuesday between 8.30 and 8.45am.! Lovely chaps who are worth their weight in gold. We have 2 communal recycle bins for veg, fruit and soft garden waste and just 5 minutes down the road is a Recycle area for glass, cartons, plastic, paper and a Sally Army one for clothes ect.
The local tip for cardboard and heavy stuff is only 6 minutes away in the car.
        Yes, very lucky indeed,
        Jenny

2 x wheelie bins for recyclables
1 x food bin (for depositing compostable bags full of food into)

Think of all the extra bin wagons needed to collect them all.

It is very environmental though. It all gets loaded into containers and shipped half way round the world for sorting and recycling.

            For a family of 3:

1 x 140 litre landfill bin that is collected every 2 weeks, but that is usually less than half full, and we only put it out every other week incase we get a missed collection.

1 x 140 litre recycling bin that is collected every 2 weeks, that again is usually only half full as we re-use (rather than recycle) because we re-use jam jars, wine/juice bottles, and grow our own to avoid packaging, etc.

            Just the 2 here
            Green bin - general waste
Blue bin - recyclable goods ie paper, cardboard, cans and certain plastics.
Optional brown bin - garden waste but I refuse to pay for it
No glass collection, have to take you own to the bottle bank

 We don't have any bins......yet.
We have black plastic bag for general rubbish and brown paper bags for recyclables and a black crate for papers, cardboard and glass.
The system works great for us and we are not looking forward to those huge plastic bins.........which I am told are on there way.
Still I suppose we will get used to them.:th scifD36:

We have five for Mrs H and me ! ( and Maya )
Black landfill bin , now on 2 week collection , we don't fill this now
Green bin for garden refuse 2 week collection
Brown bin for glass , tins , plastics 2 week collection
Blue bin for paper and cardboard 4 week collection
Which bins are collected each week is calculated by a permutation of the phase of the moon and the high tide at Liverpool I think  I just copy what the neighbours put out .
and now like others we have a little grey plastic box for kitchen waste . Does anyone actually use these ! Mines on my workbench I use it for storing my odds and sods in .
One thing you do notice on this mini survey , there is absolutely no standardisation on bin colours or number of bins.

              Brown ...Garden waste....
              Green ..general waste....
we also have that daft little bin that they expect us to have sat on our work top for kitchen waste....not much waste here...(because i'm a glutton:biggrin: ) it does come in handy for keeping my chicken medicines in though:dbgrtmb:....
I personally would rather they knocked a nice big chunk off the £150 council tax and i would gladly take it myself:dbgrtmb:

              Black - general household waste
Brown - garden waste and food waste ( no meat or fat etc.)
Blue - glass, tins, and plastic
Blue bag - magazines, newspaper, etc.
              Orange bag - cardboard
I HATE the bags!! They blow away and the cardboard one isn't big enough to hold everything.

West Cheshire Council has given us a Green Bin for "green" stuff like garden waste [no chance, it all goes on my Compost Heap!:nonofinger::snork:], a Grey Bin for general waste - non decomposable, a Red Box for Glass, cardboard etc, a Green Box for plastic and metal, a Brown small Bin for food waste which is "lockable"....the last is still unused as I don't waste food!!:heehee:
They've only just changed the system by taking away a Brown Bin [used for "Green" stuff] and replacing it with a Grey Bin [what's in a colour??:dunno:], and adding the small Brown "lockable" Bin. Out of the 5 neighbours that I have only ONE uses the small Brown Bin!!.....I'm still trying to find a secondary use for it. How many hundred of thousands of pounds this change over has cost the Council has forgotten to mention........and this in an era of austerity when the old system was working well:coffee:
