Have a look here on the JBA seed poatato site http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/Chitting_Potatoes.html

Then compare that with what others say, either later on this topic or on past topics via a search.

    I leave all mine on.

    Steve...:)

I don't bother to remove any, but we are mostly after "new potatoes".

This year I'm planning to remove chits to leave only 3 on 10 or so seed tubers at the end of the row of Main Crop to see if I get fewer, bigger, tubers for Bakers :)

This year I have removed all the chits from the top and left the chits on the side and shoulders of the potato, last year I didn't remove any so I'll see how they go.

It's more important with new potatoes to remove all but two chits, otherwise I've found I get a lot of very small potatoes. For later crops it doesn't make any difference because all the smaller ones bulk up.

I agree with JWK about leaving only two eyes chitting. Any more and the resulting crop would be smaller potatoes.

There is a video on the JBA site about taking out the extra eyes with a knife - otherwise, Iain reckons, they just grow back again. I wonder whether you are actually just getting 2 stems, or actually some more re-grow from the seed tuber? Stealing energy from the seed tuber, but possibly?? more importantly Space and Light
