Sorry folks.. [IMG] ...forgot to say they are Blue Tits. I get such a telling off by the parents every time I go near the box...even when I'm in my greenhouse they sit near by and cuss me something rotten  :D :D
I counted eight..there is one on the right and you can only see its black eye.

Just had a look after being away from home for the week and sad to say there were five chicks dead in there. They had good plumage but it looks as if they were abandoned..judging buy the state of them they must have died last week..

Welcome back, Pal, but how sad to discover this on your return. Will you hand feed the remaining three?

Sorry Lady..I didn't explain very well there! [IMG]
There were no live chicks either...don't know what happened, perhaps a Magpie took them and scared off the parents. We do have a lot of Magpies around the garden and the box is/was rather exposed.

Nick, the parents may have deserted the chicks because you disturbed them.Birds are very fickle and if disturbed, which gives away the nest site to predators will desert  I am desperate to know how many chicks we have for our third year of nesting, but Mr Kandy refuses to put a ladder up the house wall to have a look.We just hear them cheeping as we go past.

Also a cat may have taken the parents,so in desperation some of the chicks may have tried leaving the nest too early. If a Magpie was to get involved it would have taken the whole lot.It will probably always be a mystery as to what actually happened.

Kandy, after I photographed the chicks we watched the parents feeding them for the next week. They were still doing so when we went away last Saturday, and as I said, the plumage was almost complete on the dead ones..I'm sure the parents were well used to me coming and going past the nesting box but it was only six feet off the ground so I'm convinced something got at the chicks.
