Looking through the forums many replies say "dig in plenty of muck". How many square yards to the barrowload is plenty?

How long is a piece of string Ron? As long as it's well rotted, as much as you can. [IMG]

I think for general purpose soil improvement I've read a suggestion to spread the muck about two inches thick, then dig in or let the worms take it down, as you think fit - but obviously it depends a bit on the quality of your soil, what you plan to grow, and the practicalities of how much you can buy/transport/aquire (as applicable)... I agree with sarra and claire. The more the merrier, as long as it's well rotted. Light soils will appreciate its holding abilities, and heavy soils its improving/breaking up. I turned solid clay (which had been under a drive for years) into good soil by adding about a foot of manure.

I turned heavy clay into reasonable soil by putting all my fire ashes on the garden for the last 50 years, I used to burn coal but have burnt wood for over 30 years.
