I have decided to put a flowerbed into grass. The bed is approx 15 yards x 3 yards. The rest of my "lawns" are basically sort meadow! so won't need smart seed to make it match the rest, any old seed will do. I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how much seed I'll need. Thank you.

45 square yards is about 38 square meters.
Grass seed is usually sown at about 25 grams per square meter, which is 950 grams for your area.
Although I'd keep some back for patching up, and allow a bit for the birds, so 1.5 kg should be plenty.

Great thank you Kris and :loll:Clueless. Perhaps I should have said my lawns are short weeds rather than meadow!

Well at the price of those meadow seed mixes, I'd choose weeds and just train my brain to appreciate that weeds are just wildflowers. A mate of mine years ago said the best way to have a perfect garden is to develop an appreciation for dandelions.:)

Wildflower mixes won't do well on fertile soil, as the weed grasses will just run away and swamp it all. You need basically wasteland for a decent wildflower display.

I've bought grass seed from both these, very happy with both (although for 1kg your local garden centre might be best)

            http://www.lawnsmith.co.uk/shop/grass-seed

If the site is shaded worth getting a shade tolerant mix, otherwise I would get their "economy" range. Its likely to look like a high-contrast to your existing lawn for a couple of years though ... might it be worth overseeding your lawn, or the old-bit near the new-bit, to get some continuity of mix?

Hey now that's a good idea Kristen re trying to get the new bit to match in better. It is in full sun so will just get the economy mix but will get a bit more seed and give the adjacent bit a sprinkling to hopefully get the areas to blend together. Thanks very much. Hopefully will get seed and sow it tomorrow. Had a good blatter of rain which has settled the area to be seeded nicely. Another to do job ticked off, now to concerntrate on getting my new baby! (greenhouse) sorted.
