I moved from the City many years ago ,for better housing and a well paid job,to give my Wife and Family a better and healthier environment.
There was plenty employment and shops in the area.
In one small Precinct alone we had two Banks, three large grocery shops, two butchers, chemist,a large fresh fruit and veg store, restaurant, large bar and lounge, newsagents, fish and chip shop, handicraft shop, ladies and gents clothing shops and various other small shops.

In this Precinct now, we have a bookmaker, newsagent.grocers, takeaway, chemist, and a Pub.
All the other outlets are shuttered, It's a sad sight.

The older town was just a mass of good quality shops, we could purchase everything required for the home, from Groceries,clothing,furniture,D.I.Y, even a pet shop. we now have in their place.:
Buy your Gold Shops, Check Shops,Loan Shops,Pound Shops, two or three other cheap shops Charity Shops, Buy Your Old Clothes Shops,A Pub, and FOUR Betting shops.
Gone is the Community life, meeting people, having a coffee with them and having a Blether.

Gone are about seven large Employers and umpteen smaller Employers, who between them must have employed Thousands of staff , full time and part time.

It's a Sad sight when I walk or Cycle around and see all the empty spaces were Factories etc used to stand ,and all that is there is Spare Ground, No Buildings,Desolation.:sad:.

We got a few scumbags hanging around the betting shop in Bridport, don't think they've got any place on a high street.

Fortunately we got loads of small businesses that are keeping going, the tory plan to bulldoze all the small shops never happened :)

And we still got a regular market on Wednesday and Saturday :)

It is a sad state of affairs @music ...my town has certainly deteriorated over the years. They seem to have a habit of creating these new shopping centres and leave the rest of the town boarded up :rolleyespink:. As for the 'village' where I live, it was lovely when I was growing up,there was a small farm and the usual Baker, butcher, greengrocer,PO and pub,now it's been overtaken with Takeaways ,coffee shops and Hairdressers...If that's progress I'll eat my hat:frown:

Good morning all my original town has almost disappeared ,100's of empty small shops the few that are left are estate agents, and charity shops, and banks,no manufacturing industry to talk of,
the only building's they haven;t demolished are Rochester Castle and Cathedral, and the older you get the more changes you can see,its progress alright, going backwards;)

It's all over I am afraid.
12 years ago, myself and the Mrs moved to a small village just inside the M25. There were 3 pubs, a garden centre, an off license, dry cleaners, a few other shops - a real country feel.
Today - most of it has been knocked down and is housing, housing and more housing. Oh, and the charity shop is now an estate agent. :frown:

One thing with living here, is that there isn't anything that they could close, we have no shops, pubs, post office, post box all are 10 miles away

Our village has a thriving village store/news agent that's open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the year, the village Tea Shop is also the post office and high class deli, a wool and knitting shop (gives lessons as well), a florist, mobile fish shop three days a week, carpet and flooring shop, pet grooming, bakers, printers and stationery, antiques shop, about half a dozen other specialist shops.

We also have two pubs (used to be four of them), Indian restaurant, Chinese restaurant, Indian takeaway, Kebab and pizza takeaway, a brilliant fish and chip shop that also does kebabs and cooked chicken, another tea room, a small hotel with an excellent English/French restaurant, a very busy village hall (with two separate halls) with bowling twice a week, two bridge clubs, a variety of keep fit classes and martial arts, an excellent school and two churches (one of which does coffee mornings all week).

In the summer we have cricket on the village green every Sunday, and we have a football club.

The doctors surgery has its own dispensary.

And the population is only 1,600. :blue thumb:

The two small breweries closed down nearly 100 years ago and the two butchers closed in the 1970's.

We have an annual village fete, a fun fair comes to the village three times a year and the circus comes once.
