    Hi,
we have 2 pumpkin plants at our allotment and my daughter wants at least one really huge pumpkin for halloween. I tried growing pumpkins a few years ago and they didn't get much bigger than a melon, my Dad advised me to pick of all the young pumpkins bar 1 and let the plant concentrate on that one and it will grow big...is this true?
I was thinking of trying this on 1 plant and letting the other plant produce lots of smaller ones.
    Thanks

    Hi Alison,
I have grown some pretty big pumpkins in the past.. What we did was to get plenty of organic matter dug in then made a low mound & planted them on top..
This is what I did.. Keep well watered & fed.. When you have a 3 - 4 nice looking fruits forming select the best & remove all the rest.. Keep removing any new flowers too.. Sit the pumpkin on straw to keep it up off the ground..
Then very important.. Mound some fresh soil on the 1st 8" of the stem where it comes out of the ground.. You need to make sure this doesn't twist usually extra soils sorts that out.. (If they twist it cuts off the food to your pumpkin..) Then feed & water very carefully daily.. In about 60 days you should have a good sized pumpkin... :yho:

Glad I'm not the only one who briefly considered lowering the tone ...

I don't grow them myself Axie-Alie but I believe the conventional wisdom says grow pumpkins on the compost heap and pee on them.
You might get on better listening to Marley Farley.

I shall definately be following all your advice Marley and see what grows :gnthb:
Alice...I might refrain from peeing on the patch, what with it being in a public place and me being a lady!:o

You're spared from that Axie-Alie. It only works for male urine :)
And probably only the old boys :flag:
