As my wife loves sweet potatos I thought I would try and grow some.Have just been to the garden center for some compost and noticed they had some sweet potato plants for sale. But not sure how you plant them.I am going to put them in a potato sack but do I fill the sack with compost and plant the potato plant just leaving the growth sticking out.Any advice appreciated.

@Paul Blackburn do you have a bush or a vine plant as the bush are better suited to growing in containers.. You can grow them in potatoes grow bags, but if it’s the vine type it will trail away from the bag and it is harder to manage watering then.. They like a light fine sandy compost mix so the tubers grow and expand as they don’t push for growth space like ordinary potatoes.. Happy growing as if nothing else they have beautiful flowers.. ;):)

Tried them last year outside, I bought plants supposedly for UK growing, got one medium sized tuber per plant.
The tubers did not store, and just rotted.

@pete I grew the bush kind in my tunnel a few years ago and although the temps were high I only got about two potatoes per plant and disappointingly small despite food and water.. Yet other people seem to be successful.. one that I have tried and tested and not bothered with since sadly as we like them too..

Personally I think its one of those plants that needs a longer growing season than we can give it in the UK.
Consistent heat is probably another issue, rather than one sunny day followed by cool cloudy days.
