Resizing your photographs with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, instructions for both programmes are identical.

Firstly, make all your edits EXCEPT for sharpening.

    1. Click on Image/Image Size and the following box will open.

Make sure that the three boxes at the bottom are ticked and that the box next to it has "Bicubic" there. Now you just need to change the pixel size at the top, so out of the height of the width choose the number thats the largest, highlight it with your mouse and change to anywhere between 750 - 900 pixels, the other measurement will automatically change for you (because of the boxes you already have ticked). Now click "OK" Your picture will now resize.

    2. Now is the time to sharpen if you wish too.

    3. Now we can save the photo, its always best to use the "Save As" command at this stage because this will also keep any information the camera has written to the photo (EXIF info). So click on File/Save As, and the following box will appear.

    4. Navigate to where you want to save it too in the "Save in" area at the top, then name the photo in "File name" you MUST ALWAYS do the renaming part to avoid overwriting and so deleting original files. Select "jpg" from the dropdown if necessary. Click "OK" and this new box will show.

Notice you have a slider in "Image Options" and that I have moved it from 12 in the first image to 9 in the second, now look at the bottom of each box and see that the size has changed from 454kb to 162kb. This is what you need to do, you alter the slider from 12 and go downwards, as you do this the image size will drop, keep moving the slider untill the size is under 200kb and click "OK"

You should also know that when you save at that size, that around an extra 20-30kb will be added because your also saving the EXIF file info with it when you use the "Save As" command.

    Steve...:)

"[]i... because your also saving the EXIF file info[/i]"

Personally I prefer to save Without the EXIF. It can give quite a lot away - including, I believe with some cameras, the GPS location - which will tell everyone where your garden is - or where you are in the habit of stripping off - depending on the composition of your picture, of course!

There is also something else I remember reading about that a "thumbnail" can be saved of the original image e.g. before cropping. I read an article with a picture of the author's eyes, quite menacing in fact! Anyway, she had cropped it from a photograph of herself in the bath, and the original was there in the extra-info with the picture.

I'll see if I can find a link.

That's a great HowTo Steve, thanks!

"Maximum size stipulated for this forum is 640 x 480, please note!"

I don't have a problem with that, but might it be worth reviewing?

Huge files are bad news, of course, but is something that is 800px in the longest dimension a problem these days?

I see piccies here for identification (plants or bugs!), and I really struggle to see enought detail to make an informed suggestion.

    Just my £0.02p

hmm - maybe 800 x 600 would be okay - I'll change it. But no bigger.

What, they are different photographs? Just goes to show how little you can see in a 640 x 425 eh?

I could have sworn there were poppies and a red-hot-poker in the first picture, but the blow-up second picture clearly shows that to be wrong, and that actually they are Lavender and those some of those crepe-paper-flowers that school kids make :D :D
