When we’ve read our weeklies - the New Scientist and The Week - we give them to the local library. They are very grateful, as their grants have been severely cut so they can’t offer them to readers anymore. Our mags go first to Ilminster library, which then passes them on to Chard, Crewkerne and South Petherton.
    Better than the recycling bin.

Our magazines go to the doctors' surgery and the dentist.

Our doctor's and dentist will not take them due to spread of disease
Though it is OK for hundreds to read the Doc's copies of Auto Express
      and National Geographic

That's stupid! All their magazines get handled by sick people! Do they also ask their patients to come in wearing face masks and disposable gloves?

I have always sneaked 'improving' mags (like 'Doctors without Borders' or 'Organic Gardening') into surgeries without saying anything. Just left them on the pile.

In another forum ('Down the Lane') someone said:

"I just found out last week that our library takes book donations. The decent ones are catalogued and put on the shelves. The tatty ones are sold on to a paper reclamation business and will be turned into paper. An income for the library!"

        Another thing we can do!

Nooooo. Some of the best stuff I've ever read is in tatty books. Some of which are out of print now. The library would be better off simply selling any books they don't want. Even if they just put them in a pile and ask 10p each for them they'll still get more than if they sold them to a recycler. Anything they still can't offload could stand on a 'free' shelf for a week to see if anyone wants them, before finally, as a last resort, going to be recycled.

Our library here is hoping to raise £40,000 for funding a project to improve the walled garden behind it. I would like to have seen some money spent on new books!
