Today we went out with a selection of relatives. My sister in law posted photos up on Bookface, one of which is a close up shot of my oldest son. She didn't ask first, which always annoys me, but I let that go.

One of her friends has posted a comment in response to the photo, directed at my sister in law, saying 'OMG he's just like <my nephew's name>, are you sure you haven't popped out another sprog without telling us ha ha lol <other Bookface sillyness, smiley face etc>'.

Maybe I'm being over sensitive, but my son is not just like his cousin. They are very different kids. Good kids, likeable kids, but different. They don't even look alike.

Then the 'are you sure you didn't pop out another sprog bit', quite apart from the way its worded, I take this as a suggestion, albeit joking but distasteful nonetheless, that my son is not my son and that my wife is not his mam.

I know it was meant as a joke, but there are some things you just don't joke about. Am I right, or am I being a drama queen?

A bit of both I think. When it comes to children's photos being put on fb, it's a bit 'off' in my opinion if the parent/guardian hadn't been asked first. Social media is a dangerous place where children are concerned (seen so much in my previous job you see). I don't know how old your oldest is though? BUT fb is a pain in the ass place where sensitivity, decorum etc seem to go straight out of the window, where grown adults act like they're in 'da hood' or are 14 years old again... It's not big & it's not clever, with comments that can be made :/

I don't think you are a drama queen and you have right to ask facebook to remove the picture if (hopefully not your case, you can ask kindly) you minor son is there and you don't agree to have it up and they will remove it immediately.
I know there are people that say offensive jokes lightly and maybe they don't even realize that they can be offensive, but let them joke with somebody else.

I also think a bit of both. If you're not happy with SIL putting pics up of your son then you need to speak to her about it. Don't let it go.

As far as the remarks by her friend are concerned, well it's just something stupid said by one friend to another. With Facebook there's always a danger you'll read something you don't like. That's the nature of the beast I'm afraid. I'm glad I'm not a member of it ......seems to cause more trouble than it's worth.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but there is only "Like" on FB, no Dislike button.

Maybe you should just reply with "Dislike"

Its things like this that make me strongly believe that Facebook is the scourge of modern society; besides the fact that it seems that common decency is cast to the winds when it comes to posting, there is also the damage that it does to real, in the flesh relationships - - if someone posts some tripe on your Facebook page then it must be true, regardless of the facts!

When my first son was brand new, she posted pics up of him without asking. I asked her to remove them immediately. She refused. A massive row broke out and the whole carry on upset my missus. Considering my wife's feelings, I backed off. She was on my side but was upset by the whole battle thing. That's the only reason I let it go. I think I'm a nice lad, but I can be quite tenacious when I feel like someone I love or care about is being wronged in some way. Unfortunately my missus is not so tough in such matters, so I have to back off when I otherwise wouldn't.

It seems to be too big and complex to moderate.

On here we can keep an eye on things, but FB has so many levels.

She refused??? Totally out of order. I'd do what Java suggested and ask FB to remove the photos.

I've posted this before about Face Book. Last year the "Computer Active" Magazine published an article about the dangers of loose publication of pics, names and other bits of information given on Face Book and the Net. It proved the point by asking permission of a couple, interviewed on the street who used Face Book, to track and trace as much information of them as possible with only the knowledge of their names. The Magazine found them easily on Face Book and from comments made by themselves, relatives and friends [despite the couple feeling very secure about their security and privacy] found out exactly where they lived, the number, ages and names of their children, the schools they went to, their credit ratings, the registration number, make and colour of their car, the names of addresses of their relatives and friends etc.......all from their names. Using Face Book is a personal choice but you have to realise that you have no control about the information about you being released and the use that that can be put to.:dunno::mad:

Clueless, although I think that the comments on FB are a bit innocuous and nothing to bother about I definitely think that pictures should not be posted without permission.

You should ask her, politely, to remove the picture. I she doesn't, I don't know whether FB will remove them for you (don't know anything about FB). In future you need to, somehow, not let her take photos of your children - and tell her you don't want her to do so!

ARMANDII, a very salutary experiment. :blue thumb: Of course, anyone who is competent in research can also find that information, but putting things on FB makes it so much easier.
