I set up my hose reel today only to find it is leaking at the end where it goes into the body of the reel, I think it is because of this anti kink spring? what exactly am I supposed to do with the hook on the end of the spring???? do I push it down the hosepipe or what?? Help needed!! :help:

All my connectors leak, I assumed it was the way my O.H. had set it all up, my hose reaches all around my back garden, and I have to connect the reel for the front. I position it so it leaks where I want it to, and the water is not wasted.

The hose reel was standing in my kitchen as I don't have an outside tap so it was leaking all over the floor, the leak was coming from where the hose clips into the body of the reel. I am so fed up with buying stuff only to find it is a load of crap!!!!!!!! everything you buy is the same, cheaply made rubbish.:wallbanging: I'm off to find some alcohol!!!!!!

Val, if you cut a length of hose long enough to reach outside and put connectors on it you'd be able to park the reel outside and avoid a wet kitchen. If you put a stop-end connector on the outdoors end of the hose you'd be able to turn on the tap in the kitchen without water flowing out of the hose until you connect the reel or other item - would save running in and out to turn off the tap.

        My hose reel leaks too.
I have tried to replace various bits and connections, but it doesn't seem to have helped.

No, no hook other end!! I am not going to use the hose reel anymore I'll just go direct to the tap, with all the technology we have they can't come up with a hose reel that doesn't leak!!:dunno:

My hose reel has no connectors - one end of the hose goes through a hole in the hub and has a hoselock connector on it - which allows rotation of the "joint" - so the only potential leaky parts are the hose connectors at each end of the hose, which are easily replaced.

I bought a packet of replacement O-rings and when any joint starts to leak I replace them - that usually fixes it, but I find that the Hoselock type connectors crack (they are only plastic) and I use Geka instead - the greater the water pressure the stronger they push together, in fact its not possible to open a connection without releasing the water pressure first. They are gender-neutral, so you don't have the problem of trying to connect male-male etc. and are cheaper than hoselock. They also don't restrict the flow, and are a universal connector size regardless of 1/2", 3/4" or 1" hose.

I haven't got the figures to hand, but I timed filling a bucket with a stop-end connector and it reduced the flow, and thus increased the time to fill the bucket - can't remember by how much though. If you have good water pressure its probably not an issue, but if not worth trying to reduce the number of constrictions along the hose ... although if you have a problem with flow the first & best thing to do would be to use 3/4" hose in place of 1/2". 1/2" hose reduced the flow by about 50% over a 50M length :(

Sorry Val not a clue what the spring is . I have had a Hozelock reel for 7 years and it does not leak . The tap to rotating coupling hose cut it back 3" each end , place end in hot water before pushing onto the hose barb and then firmly hand tighten.

Harry, I am thinking that maybe 7 years ago they were better quality than they are now? The spring is to stop the hose kinking as you turn it into the coupling, what the hook is for though I have no idea. Perhaps you only get what you pay for with hoses, mine was the cheaper end at £19.99 complete with hose.
