I put some carrots in a few weeks ago at the lotty - I transferred them all to their growing spots on Sunday.
They've all gone in a huff & the leaves are just resting on the mud.
I've grown carrots before & never had this problem. Do I just wait & see if they perk up or is there something else I need to do?
I've got them under fleece to try ward off carrot fly.

Could be too much water???? I would just sit it out for a bit.

Some of them had perked up - the rest were still stropping like teenagers.

I wasn't up there yesterday but it was so hot here that I'm heading up in an hour to get the watering done.

This is them under 1 of the fleeces -they seem well happy. Apart from needing weeding that is:rolleyespink: image.jpg

Under the other fleece however...theyre still stropping & tops turning brown:scratch:

I have had to dig all my carrots out this year they have been a complete flop, sowed then begining of May and they only managed to grow approx.1Ins high.Resew them 2August and they are peeping through and higher than what I first put in,so fingers crossed I may get a worthwhile crop by the end of the season.

Do you think its the fluctuating weather this year @fileyboy ? I've also got carrots in pots in the garden & the few Ive picked were just stumps, so they got flung into a salad. Am going to pick the rest today as they just look untidy now.

Nice! Gonna see how mine are doing tomorrow as I can see the Orange tops poking through. I bet mine won't look as nice as yours though as I haven't put fleece over them. Although they are planted in a raised bed with onions as I have heard that this can sometimes help against the dreaded carrot bugs.

No Candyfullpots I don't think it was any thing to do with the weather as my mate on the next plot to me sew his carrots 2 weeks before me and his are perfect.

kazzawazza, I have always grown my carrot's in between my rows of onion's for a lot of years now and have had trouble with carrot fly only once in that time,as I have said before this tip was passed on to me when I was 13 years old by a chap who worked on a market garden. That was 64 years ago :thumbsup: My how time fly's when your having fun :hapydancsmil::hapydancsmil:

I dug my carrots up yesterday out of the raised bed. The good news is they weren't attacked by carrot fly at all. The bad news is that not one of them was straight, they were all shapes and some had lots of little carrots at the bottom. Any ideas why this happened?

It could be that the soil is too hard - more clay like? Try adding woodchippings or more fertilizer to break it up alot. Is it quite stoney as that can make them split too.
The length the carrot splits at is normally where the problem lies. Dig down & check it out.

The soil in beds has good drainage and is mixed with compost and manure.
