As I'm sure we all know, there is a horrible situation in Libya at present. Various nations, including Britain, are evacuating there people any way they can. Some are flying out, some are leaving on ships, both civvy and military.

Those leaving by ship are being dropped off at Malta. Malta is sticking its neck out a bit as some of the ships are military, and as the situation is a diplomatic pack of nitroglycerine, it would be easy to understand if nations were to choose to refuse any military involvement. But not Malta, that one little island in the med, they're happy to take on hundred of frightened foreigners to get them to safety. Its not the first time they've done it. During WW2 Malta was effectively one big military hospital, and refuellinng and repair station for allied forces, despite the Germans and Italians doing their best to pummel the place.

So for this, I thank the people of Malta. They must be good people, and a bit brave too.

Good post clueless1, I think the people/island as a whole was awarded the Victoria Cross for their efforts in WWII - they are made of tough stuff.

:dbgrtmb: Yea Malta comes to the fore again... :dbgrtmb:

:scratch:It seems it is just turning into a bloodbath out there & it is horrendous but sadly Gadaffi does not think like the rest of the world.. We have enough martyrs & do not need his family to be held as more.... I am so sad for the Libyan peoples but also for our oil workers trapped in the dessert.....!!!!! Can't a helicopter go & rescue them & get them to a port..???

I agree with you completely, Clueless, they're a breed apart with regards to courage. I've got some friends out there who are just fantastic. It's surprising how closely they're still connected with the UK through some of their family residing in Great Britain.

They did have one hiccup though when the Libyans made financial overtures to them and they voted in a pro-Libyan President and government, who didn't last too long because of their extreme socialism outlooks and also their friend Gadafi didn't come through with the money he'd promised!

Did anyone see Gadaffi's speech a couple of nights ago on the TV? I have been avidly watching Al Jazeera (on freeview).

It struck me as so similar to Hitler's last days in the bunker. The speech was made from a bombed bunker. Like Hitler he knew everything was lost, so he turned on his people and accused them of letting him down. He then made it clear that if he was to go down he wanted all his country to go down in flames as well.

Just seen the news. Well done to our military chaps and chapesses too. It seems that within a matter of a few hours, a makeshift runway was built in the Libyan desert, then the RAF used it to get a bloody great aircraft in, which then got loads of our countrymen out, all without anyone else knowing about it til afterwards. One of the passengers seemed to be saying that the plane flew really low for the entire flight. Presumably to stay under the radar. It is that kind of professionalism and outstanding bravery that makes me so proud of our service men and women.

It just so happens that I'm having a few beers tonight anyway, but the next can I open is dedicated to those brave military folks. I might even seef I've got any whiskey left.
