I think that hydrangeas flower on the growth that they put on the previous year. I'm not sure, but with a good feed and some tlc, you will get blooms next year.

Tip for the future, take one in three stems out, so that you have some new growth, first year wood, and second year wood, if that makes sense.

Don't worry, I butchered my hydrangea earlier this month, so I'm not expecting too much from it for a while.

    Hope this Helps!

    Hi Nathan,

Yes as plant1star says you will have cut off the flowering shoots, so stand back it will put on a good show next year if you leave it be this year.

I have a large hydrangea in my back garden which is a monster and unfortunately will be dug up and composted after flowering :(

I did consider cutting it right back but its position in the garden has been earmarked for something else next year. To big to transplant.

I did the same thing with one of my hydrangeas, trimmed the unsightly stems back in early spring and came to the conclusion that this was a big mistake.... They just don't thank you for keeping them tidy.

We learn something new everyday here on GC, Pip, and the more I think about it, it's one of the best things I could have done... (blowing trumpets for GC)
