I am a very inexperienced gardener though I like nature and beautiful gardens and parks.

I have had a small back garden facing West for about 16 years in the North of Greater Manchester. But only now when I retired about a year ago I have more time for improving my garden.
When we moved into the house where I live now the garden was a sort of a rubish yard with an old lilac bush, fuchsia bush and 3 tall trees (sorry I don't know their names). I cleaned the rubish and cut down bad branches of lilac and fuchsia. I planted roses but not all of them survived.
Another problem of my garden is that half of the soil of the garden is covered with tiles. So in this part of the garden I can have plants only near the fence and in pots.
I am not sure what kind of soil is in my garden but definitely not a good one.
Two years ago 5 tall trees in my garden were cut down ( without my knowledge! ).
So I have more sunny space in my garden now. 20160828_194256.jpg 20160610_193709-1.jpg 20160411_162819-1.jpg 20150615_170324.jpg 20150731_174338.jpg 20150731_172219.jpg My hydrangea which never flowered because it was growing in the deep shade of tall trees at last was in blossom last year for the first time. Oh, it is absolutely gorgeous dark crimson pink!
For the last several years I have planted a lot of new plants in pots. I will try to attach pictures of my garden.
I am trying to find answers to my questions on Google but sometimes it's next to impossible to find answers.
I hope that members of this forum will help me to get more information about plants.

From my little experience the size of the garden doesn't make that much difference. Have a look at the 'Gallery' section on here - some cracking gardens, some of which are smaller than others.

A good idea to use containers - you can plant anything you want regardless of the local soil conditions - and spruce up the garden with some colour.

A couple of members on here also have 'slopey' gardens (inc. myself) - much like yours - so just post a message if you're looking for 'slopey' garden ideas :).
