It's about the science of gardening by a botanist. But don't be put off - it's so easy to read, often funny, and amazingly informative.

Trust me, you will read it in one sitting and become a better gardener overnight!

Did you know that using a lot of fertiliser on your veg plot makes bigger but less nutritious veg?

This is because plants take up more of the major nutrients that make growth, but have a finite ability to take up the trace elements that make vitamins.

So a spoonful of cabbage grown on well-fertilised plot will be less good for you than a spoonful grown on a similar unfertilised plot. Wierd, huh?

I found a lot of things surprising when I first started gardening Andrew, any book that helps is good.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Good spot Andrew & yes, I did know that about nutrient uptake which is why I only use feeds that i've made myself, with a good NPK balance.

daughter #1 complained that i'd spoiled her with my homegrown veg & that the shop bought stuff was tasteless by comparison.

I knew this about veg and feeding, but this does look like an interesting book.
I know it's not quite the same thing...but we heard about an old man who had a donkey that lived on nothing at all. But it died :heehee:

Just seen this AndrewH and thank you for the information.
My husband has a birthday soon and sounds like the kind of read he would enjoy.
